The O2 Arena Gets £3 million Safety and Security Solution

ADT has won a major contract to install an integrated safety and security solution for the Arena at The O2 (formerly the Millennium Dome), which is set to open in July 2007 as a world class entertainment destination.

The deal was signed with the owners and operators of The O2, Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG) and sees ADT working with main contractor Sir Robert McAlpine. ADT will supply integrated systems using the latest technology to protect concert goers and sports fans. This will include the installation of closed circuit television (CCTV), access control, fire detection and public address/voice alarm (PA/VA) systems worth an estimated £3 million over the next year.

Adrian Casey, Managing Director of ADT Europe and South Africa comments: “This is an exciting project. The O2 Arena is one of the largest and most prestigious entertainment venue contracts that ADT has won. We have the ability to meet the very challenging demands of this development and proven experience in providing integrated systems using the latest technology at major public venues in the UK.”

The O2 is a multi-billion pound development, the centrepiece of which will be an indoor Arena for up to 23,000 fans that will host at least 150 music, entertainment and sports events in its first year. Within the facility there will be a music club, cinema multiplex and exhibition space, as well as bars and restaurants in a vibrant 'entertainment district' wrapped around the Arena under the roof. The O2 is an official venue for the 2012 Olympics, hosting both the gymnastic and basketball finals.

David Campbell, President and CEO of AEG Europe, said: “AEG is delighted to be working with ADT. The O2 will be the UK’s most exciting and technically advanced music, sport and entertainment destination. We are creating a world-class entertainment experience for visitors to the venue and ADT will play an important part in helping us to achieve that."

The security solution incorporates over 120 CCTV cameras and more than 30 door entry points. The O2 Arena security team will be able to view the entire site on multiple screens and monitor activity through a network of digital video management systems. This technology will play a major role in helping deter and detect any type of crime or anti-social behaviour at the venue.

The fire detection system consists of over 900 smoke detectors, 50 call points, more than 5,500 metres of pipe and eight networked control panels. This will continuously monitor air within the venue to provide an alert of a pre-fire condition before a fire fully develops.

A PA/VA system will also be installed, which forms part of the main Arena sound system, in addition to supporting the surrounding areas where venue’s music can be heard. It includes 1,200 speakers delivering in excess of 200,000 watts of sound power and will provide vital announcements and alerts.

Clive Hunter, Account Director, Leisure, at ADT said: “The size and timescale of this project presents a number of unique challenges. The key to our success will be working in co-operation with over 100 contractors on site. To meet the project deadlines, over 13,500 hours will be worked by ADT engineers over the next 12 months. The installation phase will be complete in May 2007, in time for testing and commissioning prior to the July opening.”

The O2 Arena joins a list of major sporting and entertainment venues in the UK that are protected by ADT, including Wimbledon, Twickenham, the City of Manchester Stadium, the Barbican and Royal Albert Hall.
